Robert Berman / E6 Gallery is pleased to present MISSPELLED, an alphabet by Victor Reyes, handmade in California. The ambitious public art installation turned gallery exhibition explores the artistsʼ unique approach to graffiti, by dissecting individual letters and exploring the anatomy and architecture found in the symbols we use to
communicate. Inspired by San Franciscoʼs streets, surfaces, and overall visual vibrancy, Reyes reinterprets the letters and presents them to us in a brilliant array of color and movement. These alphabets, recontextualized on various abandoned surfaces around the city, are not intended to provide answers, but to raise questions about how we interpret public spaces and the content assumed within.

Over the past 2 years, Reyes has been diligently painting freestanding alphabets within San Francisco on the many vacant surfaces that resulted from the financial crash in 2008. What started as an initial impulse to push color and movement in a city with a long history of outdoor murals and graffiti has morphed into an attempt to inspire personal and public change in reaction to the economic downturn of recent years.

The individual letters painted in multitude have become an indiscernible narrative written in spray paint and acrylic house paints. These letters adorn trucks, fences, walls and rooftops throughout San Francisco. Alphabets have been strung together and carved out of forgotten spaces, exceeding his original intentions, multiplying in numbers.

Reyesʼ restlessness in California over the last two years is portrayed in the landscapes and figures formed out of these letters. Often using the juxtaposition of vibrant colors and dirt, his unique hand-painted characters are meant to exist on their own, an unconventional quality rarely seen with most street writing. Their message is scattered and fleeting, open to interpretation; The letters are ephemeral, constantly weathering, fading over time, and are often facing neighborhood intervention. The placement of letters on the sides of panel trucks that disappear at the change of a stoplight exemplifies the alphabetʼs physical mobility, in most cases leaving us with only a photograph as proof of their existence. Since the projectʼs inception in 2008, Reyes has executed over forty site-specific murals around the city, as well as created countless studies and mixed media works for the exhibition.

In addition to the street installation and gallery exhibition MISSPELLED will also take on the form of a 104 page book documenting the story of these alphabets and how they came to be. It will include photographs, studies and reproductions of the murals and works featured in the exhibition. The release of the book will coincide with the opening of the exhibition, and will be available throughout the show.

Reyes has been painting since the early 90s, and has shown extensively around the world, in Bosnia, Germany, Switzerland, Taipei, Japan, and Miami. Recent shows include blue.print.for.space/Primary Flight at Miami Art Basel 2009, Public Provocations at Carhartt Projects in Germany, Will Rise at Robert Berman Gallery (Los Angeles) in 2008, and Letters First, a traveling show in Japan/Korea/Barcelona 2006-2008. Reyes is inspired by his peers, including a community of new California artistʼs “The Seventh Letter” who have had integral role in the development and motivation for this body of work.

This video came out 94, it's amazing how fresh it still is today. When this record came out, it scared the shit out of me. I was nine at the time, and an older friend of mine in the neighborhood gave me the CD to check out. I remember studying the packaging in my room, I never saw anything like it before, at that age I'm sure I couldn't even comprehend all the feelings it brought up. Rediscovering this video today brought me to pull out the CD, reminding me what a tremendous impact it made on me.

Night Horse

Todd and I are were asked to do some new graphics for Night Horse's European tour next month! Here's a few clips of the inspiration material we are referencing for the project. Most of the images are from early western comics from the 1940's and 50's, with a few random finds from other sources. Lately, I've been hooked on these old comic books, and I've found the internet to be a great source to uncover some of these images without coming out of pocket...

i pick up work here and there at my friend sean's print shop. he was talking about trying to do skateboards, just to learn more than anything else. so we built a screen and a frame/hinge. cropped down the positive from an older poster print. still need to try some things, learn some things. printing skateboards is a different animal than tshirts and posters. but it felt good to try. felt like a good start. and i'm pretty happy with what we got even if the process isn't 100%.

Dude! where is my APOCALYPSE?!

This past month Alexander DeMaria, Jack Schneider, and I had a show at FiftySevenDelle Gallery in Boston. The show featured solo and collaborative works by all of us. As a special project for the show Alex and I threw a drum set off my four story roof, recorded the impact and made drum beats from the destruction. The destroyed set was displayed in the gallery space, with the nihilistic sounds leaking out of the twisted drum carcass. Brutal.

They all make a living off their art, but they also have an urge to exhibit their work illegally in the streets. "Inside Outside" is a film about the energy artists get when working in the street. An energy they're missing when exhibiting in galleries and museums, an energy that brings life to their art and to their own lives. It´s an energy that's partly caused by the fact that everything these artists do in the street is illegal; "Anything that gives you security is eventually going to restrict you at some point", says Swoon about the art galleries.

The Swans are not dead! so excited about this, although I'm sure 90% of the people reading this have no idea what I'm talking about, its still great news nonetheless to myself and the 10% in the know! And for those of you in the dark, now's a good time to broaden your musical interests by delving into Swans vast catalog of post-punk audio triumphs...

"As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, there was a point a few years ago during a particular show when I was on tour with Angels Of Light, with Akron/Family serving as the backing band. It was during the song The Provider. Seth’s guitar was sustaining one open chord (very loudly), rising to a peak, then crashing down again in a rhythm that could have been the equivalent of a deep and soulful act of copulation. The whole band swayed with this arc. Really was like riding waves of sound. I thought right then, “You know, Michael, Swans wasn’t so bad after all...” . Ha ha! It brought back – in a flood – memories, or maybe not memories, more a tangible re-emersion in the sensation of Swans music rushing through my body in waves, lifting me up towards what, I can only assume, will be my only experience of heaven. It’s difficult – and probably pointless – to try to describe this experience. It’s ecstatic, I suppose – a force of simultaneous self negation and rebirth. Really, I probably only experienced this a handful of times to such an extreme extent during the entire 15 year history of Swans. All the elements have to align perfectly, and you can’t force it, though you might constantly strive for it. I don’t mean to be too lofty here, but it’s a fact. I’m talking about my own experience of the music (though I’d hope people in the audiences along the way might have experienced a similar episode). When I ask myself if I believe in God, I start to say NO, but then I remember that sensation, and I’m not so sure. So I want more of that, before my body breaks down to such an extent that it won’t be possible any more. So I’m doing it.

Naturally, some of the material for this new record will be songs, centered around the voice and words. Other parts (I’m hoping) will be reaching for what I’ve described above. One thing I want to point out right now: THIS IS NOT A REUNION. It’s not some dumb-ass nostalgia act. It is not repeating the past. After 5 Angels Of Light albums, I needed a way to move FORWARD, in a new direction, and it just so happens that revivifying the idea of Swans is allowing me to do that. I’ll be using what I learned in the last several years to inform the way this new material develops, while carrying forward from where Swans left off with its final album Soundtracks For The Blind, and in particular, Swans Are Dead. If you have expectations about how Swans should be, that’s your business, but it would be a disservice to both of us if I were to make music with your needs in mind, and the music would certainly suffer as a result. In any event, I certainly never thought this day would arrive, but it’s inevitable, it’s here, it’s fate, so I’m succumbing to it.

Helping me in this quest are the fantastic musicians and friends listed below. I’ll enter the studio with the songs, we’ll hash them out together, someone will come up with something unexpected, then that will lead to new ideas, the song will take a different trajectory and the material will grow on its’ own. This is what I’m hoping, anyway.

Over the holidays I took a little road trip up north with my main man Winter. We rode the 1 along the coast, and then shot into the mountains just above Santa Barbara into the small town of Santa Ynez. We stopped and checked out the Solvang Motorcycle Museum's awesome collection (pictured below), put some back at the maverick saloon ( the toughest bar I've ever stepped foot in), and enjoyed a good Christmas roast with my folks(that rhymed)... Good times.

An underground water infrastructure project is Kasukabe, Saitama, Japan built for preventing overflow of the city's major waterways and rivers during rain and typhoon seasons.

Work on the project started in 1992; it consists of five concrete containment silos with heights of 65 m and diameters of 32 m, connected by 6.4 km of tunnels, 50 m beneath the surface, as well as a large water tank with a height of 25.4 m, with a length of 177 m, with a width of 78 m, and with 59 massive pillars connected to a number of 10 MW pumps that can pump up to 200 tons of water into the Edogawa River per second.

Here's some info on the project:

"The box set and everything it includes(aside from the LP itself) have been designed and constructed by Husk Industries (SF). Husk Ind and resident pen wizard Todd White have collaborated with Ancestors over the past few years to offer unique merchandise at shows, all of which have been produced with the intent to present goods that graphically complement, and function visually as one with the sound and progressive vision of the band.

From the pen to the press we strive to achieve visually what Ancestors has created sonically, by interpreting the energy of the sound and translating it into something tangible. The purity of the process is what separates us, as we have no intent to put out anything that's been tampered: no clip art, no short cuts, no biting, all ink, all brush or pen, and only us, having been built by our hands from start to finish. It's a great honor to have worked with Ancestors so far, and we're all really excited to be a part of helping with the release of their new record, Of Sound Mind. Also of note is the album art work that Derek Albeck created for this release; a truly fresh and unique vision. We have been fans of his work for a long time and we're really excited to have him as a part of this collective effort.

Over all, the intention is to present a truly unique piece that will be as visually stimulating as it is aurally. And once these are gone, they're gone."

Robert Berman Gallery is pleased to present Vagos y Reinas, an exhibition of selected works by artists and muralists Mac and Retna. Vagos y Reinas marks the first time these longtime collaborators have exhibited in a gallery together.

Mac and Retna are unlikely partners. Mac is a photorealist: His work in spray paint makes the medium dissolve into a sea of classical touches. Retna is all brush: He is known for his abstract embellishments and calligraphic font. Collaboration is a constant in graffiti, but from the first time that Mac and Retna worked together on a mural it was clear that each painter brought out the best in the other; that the precision of one balanced the looseness of the other. In the five years since, Mac and Retna have collaborated on more than 20 murals around the globe, producing some of the most memorable, monumental work in recent memory. Vagos y Reinas is their widely anticipated first collaborative gallery show.

Mac and Retna’s murals are points of neighborhood pride, and it has made them local heroes. They often get involved in the communities they paint in, speaking in schools or mentoring young artists. Their murals have also become local landmarks—so much so that their piece on La Brea and 3rd was included in a recent Los Angeles Times ad campaign featuring iconic people and places that represent the city.

Vagos y Reinas brings their outdoor work inside. The title of the show, which translates to “vagrants and queens,” references Mac and Retna’s street-infused styles and celestial depictions of women. On exhibit are large-scale pieces that represent some of their best work together. For example, with “Gracias a la Vida,” an 11-by-11-foot canvas, Mac and Retna exalt a photo of a beautiful woman into a divine being. It is a perfect example of their use of graffiti and fine art, combining spray paint with Alphonse Mucha’s whiplash curves, motifs pulled from Byzantine art, and a powerful image that recalls Gustav Klimt.

The exhibit also serves as a retrospective, showcasing individual work from each artist before and after they met, as well as brand new pieces that demonstrate their maturation. “I think that our development as individual artists has made our collaborative work that much stronger and more unique,” Mac explains. Mac will show his extremely technical photorealistic canvases, while Retna plans to create a floor-to-ceiling installation of his calligraphic font.

The exhibition coincides with the release of Alianza (Upper Playground/Gingko Press), a 96-page hardcover book that documents their partnership over the years. Vagos y Reinas is open to the public from September 26 to October 17, 2009, during normal gallery hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 12 to 6 p.m.

Retna "American Revolutionaries"

Husk Industries is proud to present the release of "American Revolutionaries," the first print in new series of limited serigraphs by Los Angeles graffiti phenomenon Retna.

"American Revolutionaries" is the first of four prints to be released as part of "The Americana Series." The series embodies the recent evolution of the artist's letter form, brilliantly executed through a rich array of traditional "americana" colors. The series will consist of four large scale serigraphs, each distinctly unique in form, yet unified in a vibrant palette of blue, red, silver and cream. "The Americana Series" will be limited to four editions of fifty, with each print signed and numbered by the artist.

I just dropped by my good friend Matt Winter's shop to get a glimpse at the 27 T project he's finishing up. I'm always inspired to see people around me setting their goals for creation and seeing them through. And if there's one person that never ceases to impress it's Matt, who's been rolling out countless traditional hot rod project's like this since he got the itch for the craft back in high school. Here's a few candid shots of the shop, and the new project for your viewing enjoyment.

MIAMI

So I decided to take a little trip out to Miami last week to see my little sister and catch a little break. I guess I also decided to bring the lovely San Francisco weather with me this time, as it was non stop rain and wind the whole trip. Not that it bothered me, as I'm not a big fan of sun anyways (as you can see in the picture below). My sister on the other hand is a real professional sun person (picture below my picture). And as I was packing to catch a plane back west, the glorious Miami sun decided to peak it's head. So we ventured off to the art's district to check out some of the murals that we're part of last years Miami Basil. There was a ton of great work all over place, but with a plane to catch I could only flick a few favorites:

(Not a sun person: Hence the squinting eye and the tan line ending just below the shirt sleeve)

(Sun person: Naturally soaking in the rays, with the grace only found on a Summer Abercrombie catalogue)

REYES. A great piece with a very fitting Miami color palate.

THE MAC / RETNA. Doing it big as always (This piece is Massive in person!).

Deep Slumber Lake Prints.

A few of these prints where left over from Deep Slumber Lake's exhibition at the Santa Fe Institute of Contemporary Art. They are one color screen prints on various colored poster stock. And they are limited to an edition of five per color variation. These, as well as an edition on thick kraft board are now available in the Husk Estore. So get while the getting is good, as we only have a few prints per edition leftover. Oh... and did we mention that these are under $10! can you say "Stimulus plan". Spend a few bucks and get your own 20" X 23" inches of stoner metal mayhem! (i.e. bongz, axez, goat headz, swordz, bonez, teethz and of course Hornz.)
